Well, it just wouldn’t be the holiday season if things weren’t getting crazy around here! Living in Portland, Decembers are typically filled with overcast skies, heavy rain, and maybe a little bit of slush (if we’re lucky).
This year, we’ve already had TWO days filled with snow and the whole city is freaking out.
Being the homebody that I am, the weather hasn’t affected me *too* much — other than interfering with some of my party plans!
Last week, my family had planned a get-together at my parents’ place. Everyone was meant to bring some wine so we could have a tasting, and my parents put together a spread of meat, cheese, and other tasty treats.
Most importantly, we were going to watch Christmas Vacation. My family, like many, is obsessed with this movie.
Our party got snowed out last week, so we weren’t able to get together to watch it! Devastating, I tell you.
By the way, when I say ‘snowed out’ I mean there was about half an inch of snow on the ground.
Portlanders are notoriously terrible snow drivers, and we all have a fear of getting stuck. I’m not sure I know anyone who hasn’t had to abandon their car and hike at one point or another during a “storm.”
I just received my shipment from WINC Wines last week, and Kito deemed it worthy of sharing with the family.
Due to the inclement weather, we rescheduled the party and were supposed to get together last night.
Yesterday afternoon I looked up from my book and noticed the view in my backyard. Ack! More snow!!
This time it was closer to four inches of snow, and all three of my sisters were trapped in traffic. They all had to call, text, and snap me (oldest, middle, and youngest sisters) to complain about the roads. It took them more than 3 hours to make their 15 minute commutes!
Then there was little old me… the work-from-homer of the family.
I decided to put a bottle of WINC’s Finke’s Widow Sparkling Chenin Blanc ‘on ice’ and wait for my boyfriend to get home.
By the time he arrived it was full dark, so we cuddled up by the fire to enjoy the wine. Don’t feel bad for my family — they’ll still get to share the second bottle of Finke’s with me tomorrow night. We will have that party if we have to walk there in snow shoes! It’s weather like this that makes me appreciate the world that we live in.
I mean, guys, wine by mail. And not the kind where you have to belong to a single-vineyard wine club and pay exorbitant shipping costs to get it to your house.
Trust me, I’ve tried those. My new wine bff, WINC, is a personalized way to enjoy a wine club. You start by answering six easy questions, like about how you take your coffee and how you feel about citrus. They use your answers to curate a personalized box of wine and ship it right to your door.
You can look over your recommendations, then edit your box to suit your needs. For my most recent box, I doubled up on sparkling wine (uhh, hello holidays), then went with a bottle each of the Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy Sauv Blanc and Matchlock Cab Sauv.
If you’re a wine lover like me, you’ll appreciate the tasting notes they send out with your shipment.
Notice how I said ‘wine lover’ and not ‘aficionado’.
I love me some wine, but I don’t always have the easiest time picking it out.
Truth be told, I’m a sucker for a beautiful label; I’ve been fooled many times at the grocery store!
WINC works with artists to create the most gorgeous labels for their bottles, so you can bring a beautiful bottle to a party and know that it will be delicious!
Plus, I have a special surprise for you: use the promo code ‘wanderlust‘ to receive a $25 discount off of your first order from Winc! Alright, friends, I’m off to go play in the snow. Until next time — Cheers!
